Laguna Golf Bintan

Laguna Golf Bintan originally opened in mid-1998 and was designed by the world-renowned designer, Greg Norman and when it opened was one of the best golf courses in Bintan. Although the course was still popular with the local and overseas golfer, it was starting to show its age, and so a decision was made to give the golf course a major overhaul. The intention was not to totally redesign the course but to improve and update the layout and open up some of the views, especially on those holes close to the ocean. A large part of the renovation involved removing some trees and jungle to open up the views around the courses and to give it a more open feeling.

The course now has breath-taking views of the ocean on holes 2 & 4 and large water hazards are a feature on the 6th & 8th holes. You then start to climb slightly uphill away from the ocean and finish the front nine with a par 4 bringing you back to the clubhouse. You are back in the jungle for the first part of the inward nine, and then on the 15th you play back towards the seas which is one of the holes that has benefitted from the removal of some of the jungle. The 17th is the stand out hole – a short par 3 played from a slightly elevated tee box to a green beside the sea protected by a spectacular rock formation.

The newly revamped Laguna Golf Bintan offers great variety with holes that feature jungle, large lagoons, rock formations and great ocean views.

The new layout stretches to 6,890 yards from the back tees and offers a unique challenge to golfers of all standards. A great mixture of risk and reward holes offers golfers numerous birdie opportunities, but you need to take great care because the wrong positioning or club selection can get you into a heap of trouble.

The originally designed front and back nine holes have been switched to make for a better finish to your round as your meet the more spectacular ocean side holes as you complete your round. And this means a much more exciting finish to your round than was experienced with the previous layout.

All of the greens have been rebuilt and remodeled to the highest standards meaning that the greens here will be fast and true all year round. Many of the tee boxes were elevated, and several new ones were added to give golfers a better view of what lies in wait before they tee off. In keeping with many jungle courses which already have enough natural hazards, the number of bunkers reduced, and all of them have been rebuilt to ensure that they drain quickly after a tropical downpour.

There has been significant landscaping to make sure that areas that looked bare before have bene covered with local flora and fauna which gives the course a lusher and greener feeling. Planted within them, offering denser and more natural looking setting.

The overall objective of this project was to make Laguna Golf Bintan and more visually exciting experience and to give golfer of all standards an interesting challenge which rewards good shot making. There is no doubt that this was achieved and it’s great to see the rebirth of this Greg Norman masterpiece.
