Rams Hill: An Oasis Unlike Any Other
Rams Hill is the best course in San Diego county, hands down. Not officially, but it should be. We will have to track down the entity/person that will deem this property numero uno.
The location might have others saying it’s not, but once you arrive at the gates you quickly realize you have escaped the rat race of life and get to enjoy every stunning contour that Rams Hill offers, making the remote location null and void.
I imagine that a similar feeling exists at Bandon Dunes… Anybody up for a trip next year?
A bit of history…
This course was resurrected from the dead! The course was originally Rams Hills (27-holes) before a name change in 2004 to Montesoro Golf & Social Club. You can still see shadows of past holes near the signature 18.
It’s hard to believe that this course is available to the public, but from a business perspective this is the only way to survive because of the location. I hope that this golf course will survive the long term as many courses in San Diego have not, Escondido Country Club and Stone Ridge in Poway to name a few.
I first read about this course in 2014 and made tee times that same week! I originally wrote a review about this course before many knew Rams Hill existed which allowed me to fall in love with this special place. I don’t think I am alone in this sentiment.
Since 2014 the course has held up. I make the journey 2-3 times a year: one standing tee time for my birthday in November which has become a friend favorite as we play two rounds on the same day, finishing the last round in the black of night with nothing but our cell phones to illuminate the very dark Borrego Springs desert.
If you have not made your tee time for this year, do it. You will not regret the decision. The fun layout will bring you back for more. The course will be enjoyable, that is if the wind doesn’t get a bit gusty. Make your tee time and think of it as a ski day; block off the entire day to really enjoy the experience!
